The Priority of Communicating

In The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive, Patrick Lencioni talks about the huge problem we busy leaders have with trying to focus. With so much to do and our team demanding so much of our time, how can we be sure we are doing the right things every day? Two of Lencioni’s four obsessions are gaining organizational clarity and communicating that clarity. Those were the exact things lacking in our young team in Vienna. Here’s what Lencioni says:

Within companies that effectively over-communicate, employees at all levels and in all departments understand what the organization is about and how they contribute to its success. They don’t spend time speculating on what executives are really thinking, and they don’t look for hidden messages among the information they receive. As a result, there is a strong sense of common purpose and direction, which supersedes any departmental or ideological allegiances they may have. 4

Donna’s team leader, Jennifer, has a regular conference call on Monday mornings with her team leaders scattered all over the country. Sometimes I am home and listen in as Jennifer is leading a collaborative mastermind hour. She’s guiding, asking questions, listening, and sharing the latest success strategies for their business. I always think to myself, “She is doing the right thing with these Monday-morning calls.” She is staying in touch with her leaders and they know what is going on. There is no confusion about direction, priorities, or where their leader stands this week. As of this writing, Jennifer has about twenty high-octane leaders on that call every Monday, and their success is inspiring. Jennifer never asks her team to do anything she is not out there doing herself.

The opposite type of leader is an isolated leader, one who is fueling the flames of discord because people are reading into their work environment things that are not even there. Neglected followers provide very little usefulness to the cause.

Learn to overcommunicate by a factor of ten. Speak, rinse, and repeat. Everyone you work with struggles with tech clutter. The emails, texts, blogs, IMs, Facebook and Twitter posts, and you name it create background noise that makes it tough for your message to get through. You will never overcommunicate. I don’t think that is possible. Many effective leaders I know have Monday-morning stand-up meetings with their team just to touch base and start the week on the same page.

Learn to overcommunicate by a factor of ten.
